Diet Destiny?

Posted in Personal at 1:33 pm by psquire

As I mentioned in a previous post, I was recently diagnosed with a diverticular disease. I was at a completely lose when I given the diagnoses. To turn my attention away from the symptoms that I experienced, I turned on the T.V.. The first sounds emitted were not expected, “digestive health”.
Normally I would not pay attention to this type of T.V. programming, but something about the situation compelled me. I thought this must be diet destiny. The show was presented on Maryland Public Television and was an educational program by Brenda Watson a digestive care expert. The presentation was based on her H.O.P.E Formula. The H.O.P.E Formula stands for:
H (high fiber- 35 g).O(Omega-3 Oils- 2 g). P(Probiotics - 6 billion cultures). E (Enzymes - every meal)
I have included the specific daily amount that you should include in your diet - yikes. Luckily, however she mentioned that you could obtain supplements. So over the next several weeks, I will be trying out the various supplements. The supplements or information that she provided in the program, I have listed below to start the progress.

Fiber - organic flax, oat bran, acacia fiber, psyliium fibers

Omega-3 Oils - Supplements-
Food: best source, wild salmon - not necessary farm raised.

Probiotics - Supplements- 6 billion cultures / day
Deliver system - capsule or the tablet is enteric coated - bypasses the acid of the stomac, delivers the cood bacteria direcly to the intestinal tract.

Enzymes- Supplements- Digestive enzyme ( protease, amylase, lipase) take with the meals assisting body with digesting food

A Lost for the Lab School

There are several school specifically focused on instruction for individuals with Learning Disabilities. One of those founding institution’s is the Lab School in Washington D.C (1967). The truly special thing about this school is that it taught both children (during the day) and adult’s (night classes) who were diagnosed with Learning Disabilities or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, This past week the Lab School in Washington D.C. suffered a great loss. Dr. Sally Smith, who founded the Lab School past away last Saturday. While I never personally met Sally, I heard a great deal about work and her dedication to helping others, and I am certainly inspired by what she has accomplished.

Diverticulitis What?

Posted in Personal at 3:30 pm by psquire

It started last Wednesday morning with sharp pains in my left lower abdominal. Then a trip to the ER. Then a diagnoses of diverticulitis and a piece of paper, “You have been diagnosed with Diverticulitis. Now What?”. The “now what” has been a whirl wind event. After eight days of antibiotics, nausea, and dizziness the fog is beginning to clear. I am now learning more about the diagnoses, but more importantly what it means for my diet.

This first entry is to describe the impact this condition has on my body. Subsequent entries will describe what it means for my diet.

A good place to find information about the condition can be found at MedlinePlus: Diverticulosis and Diverticulitis.

What is Diverticulitis, or specifically Diverticular disease?

Diverticulitis is the inflammation or infection of the intestine. The inflammation/infections is due to outgrowth of pouches on the intestine. The outgrowth of these pouches are the result of stress on the intestinal wall, and the development of these pouches is the Diverticular disease.  In order to reduce the strain on the intestine, and the best thing one can do is to increase the fiber in their diet.  If I am going to change my fiber diet, I might as well update my diet habits as well.
